Tasting Notes
Egly-Ouriet is at the forefront of the new 'Artisan' movement. This will thrill and surprise many the first time it is tried as it balances freshness with incredible complexity. Natural ferments, wild yeasts, no filtration or fining, no stainless steel, extended time on lees, and minimal to zero dosage. This is less is more, non-intervention taken to the extreme. Honey, red and black fruits, and spice on the nose.
A powerhouse of a wine, Grand Cru Brut (which was once known as Brut Tradition) is made exclusively from Grand Cru vines predominantly in Ambonnay but also Bouzy and Verzenay. 70% pinot and 30% chardonnay, Based on the excellent 2017 vintage it also sees the addition of 50% reserve wines, lengthy 50 months on lees has given true richness to the wine.
Based on the 2017 vintage, Egly's NV Brut Grand Cru unwinds in the glass with aromas of pear, freshly baked bread, lemon zest, tangerine and praline. Full-bodied, layered and elegantly muscular, with terrific concentration, racy acids and chalky structure, it concludes with a long, gently honeyed finish. Egly has always been enthusiastic about the quality of his Ambonnay fruit in 2017, and this bottling certainly validates his early confidence. WILLIAM KELLEY, wineadvocate.com
