Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame 2006
La Grande Dame is the pinnacle achievement of this consistently great house. A fitting tribute to one of the legendary pioneers of Champagne, the widow Clicquot. Seven years on lees, it is a blend of 53% Pinot Noir and 47% Chardonnay (Chardonnay is up on the prior 2004 vintage) sourced from the eight Grand Cru villages most favoured by Madame Clicquot in her day.
Immediately flavoursome and appoachable, delivering rich generous layers of toast, honey and nutty complexity, with underlying citrus and zest. Lively balanced acidity holds it all together and proves persistent and lingering.
