Henri Billiot Cuvee Julie NV
This one-off release was named for Laetitia's daughter Julie. Vinified in stainless but aged in oak giving the impression of Burgundy with bubbles! The maturation in oak has given a toasty, smokey, savoury edge to the wine. Full bodied and rich with a creamy aftertaste of coffee and caramely.
This aromatic bubbly offers an exotic mix of flavors, with honeysuckle, marjoram, myrrh, coconut and ginger notes accenting patisserie apple, kiwifruit, honey and toast flavors. It's all packaged with vibrant, balanced acidity and finely detailed texture. Drink now through 2020. AN - Spectator
Owned and operated by Serge Billiot and his daughter Laetitia. The vineyards have been in the family since early in the 20th century. Whilst pressing grapes for Mumm and Moet & Chandon, Serge's great-grandfather Louis Billiot decided to bottle some of his own wine. Henri Billiot (Serge's Father) created Champagne H.Billiot et Fils after he inherited the vineyards. Serge took over in 1954. Laetitia has taken over most of the day-to-day activities from her father and she is a force to be reckoned with. She runs the small but very busy estate as well as looking after her family and is a perfect example of how young women are making a huge impact on the wine world.
The estate comprises of 5 hectares of Grand Cru vineyards spread across 18 different mid-slope parcels of limestone in Ambonnay. The wines are fermented in enamel-lined steel vats with both cuvee prestige Laetitia'( named after Serge's daughter) and 'Julie' (named after Serge's Grand-daughter) aged in old oak barrels. Malolactic fermentation is blocked, as the wines are already quite rich due to the maturity of the vines. The wines are neither fined nor filtered
